After a long winter of sealed-up homes and a furnace working overtime, your system's probably ready for a breather. Now that we’re into the thick of summer, there’s one small thing you can do that makes a big difference in how your house feels: change your furnace filter.
It sounds minor, I know. But that filter’s been through months of trapping dust, lint, pet hair, and who-knows-what else. By the time July rolls around, it’s usually more clogged than you’d think. Swapping it out takes just a few minutes, and it helps your system breathe easier, cool more efficiently, and use less energy in the process.
Even if you haven’t touched your thermostat since March, your HVAC system hasn’t really had a break. That filter's been catching winter dust, spring pollen, and now whatever summer is throwing around (hello, mowing season). A dirty filter means your system has to work harder than it should. That leads to higher energy bills and more wear and tear than necessary.
If someone in your house struggles with asthma, allergies, or just doesn’t like breathing in a bunch of airborne junk, a clean filter really helps. Especially this time of year when pollen and mold are everywhere. A fresh filter gives your indoor air a fighting chance.
If you’ve flipped on the AC and noticed it’s not quite keeping up, the first thing I always recommend is checking the filter. Cooling and heating usually share the same airflow path - same ductwork, same blower, same filter. If that filter’s gunked up from winter, your AC is already working harder than it needs to.
Not a big DIY person? No problem! Swapping a filter is one of the few things I do encourage homeowners to handle themselves. You don’t need tools, it only takes a few minutes, and it’s hard to mess up. Just make sure you note which direction the airflow arrows are pointing before you pull the old one out. That being said, if you’re more comfortable having us do it, give us a call! We’ll schedule a yearly maintenance (which is always a good idea anyway), and we’ll replace the filter while we’re there.
A quick tip about your fan setting: If you want to keep air moving more consistently (and filter more of it in the process), try setting your fan to “On” instead of “Auto.” Having the fan always running helps with comfort and circulation, especially in two-story homes. Just keep an eye on your filter - more run time means you’ll need to check it a little more often.
If you’re not sure where your filter even is, or if it’s been more than a year since your last maintenance visit, give us a call. We’ll check everything over and bring the right filter with us.
Little things like this really do make a difference. A clean filter helps your home feel better, run better, and cost less to cool. And if you ever need a hand, you know where to find us.
Ready to give it a try, but need a new filter? Give us a call! We can drop it off for just the cost of the filter - no delivery fee!
